First you will need to work on removing the broken key pieces from within the keyway of your door lock.
Don t call the locksmith just yet.
If your lock barrel is a little loose trace back the screw that is level with the lock on the inside of the door.
If your doorknobs feel a little loose and jiggly you may need to tighten either the lock set for most modern doorknobs or the knob itself on older mortise style passage locks pictured below.
Disassemble the lock to view the placement of the screws you need to disassemble the lock to see how the set screws.
Once the key pieces have been extracted the door lock should be examined.
Tighten until firmly in place making sure not to over tighten.

If it s too small you can t exert adequate tightening force.
Detach the knob from the door by inserting a key into the lock cylinder and turning it left without retracting the bolt.
